LAWRENCE

Jamaican and Dominican-American Lauryn Lawrence is a photographer and curator who’s work examines her experiences as an Afro-Latina intersectional feminist. Lawrence was born in South Florida, where she currently resides.

Her multimedia works are both analytical and introspective. Lawrence emphasizes on capturing representations of intersectional communities in society, as well as paying attention to the relationship between people and their spaces. Her curatorial work expounds upon and creates themes within the uncomfortable and profound conversations that many artists address. Learn more about her practice within the link below.

ABOUT THE CURATORIAL FORUM

The initial question that inspired this project was how can curators create a more inclusive platform and more accessioning opportunities for artists from minority demographic backgrounds, without categorising them? This became the foundation for my research.

As I navigated through my Master’s degree in Museum Studies, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with several curators on their experiences and being able to reflect on my own. The main issue I noticed was the lack of an informal support network where we can share our experiences, ideas, and concerns with another. The conversations and data collected informed and developed my initial idea and have led to making The Curatorial Forum

The Curatorial Forum is a website designed as a platform to enable dialogue and collaborative professional development within curatorial practices. It focuses on highlighting and exploring intersectional feminist practices within museums and galleries, while working to create more of a support network with practitioners to discuss these matters.

I aim for this project to make a difference within the art world, specifically in relation to curatorial strategies for exhibiting artists of varied intersectionalities. It will do this by creating a space to have important conversations and challenging ingrained curatorial thinking, while simultaneously building a dynamic informal network with the potential to achieve so much more.

MISSION & VALUES

The Curatorial Forum is committed to creating safe space for anyone to interact with the text and art that is being shared through this platform. This forum values diversity and intersectionality within museum and gallery spaces. With this platform, I aim to facilitate further dialogue between practitioners and all those interested concerning the ways in which identity and intersectionality are discussed and represented within museum spaces.

Our mission is to champion further personal and professional curatorial development while building an informal support network through an online collaborative platform designed for practitioners to discuss these matters.
